Notes

While today the failure of collectivization is apparent in every society where it has been tried, in the twentieth century it was probably historically inescapable that impoverished rural societies, China and Vietnam notable among them, should attempt implementation of the theories of Marx and Lenin and so discover for themselves their unworkability. The human cost was appalling—but so was that of the American attempt to prevent such an experiment by force of arms.
